Cleff lives with his uncle in a two-story light yellow house near the Warner Bros. movie lot. Cleff never met his parents and his Uncle Louis raised him from near-birth, so as far as Cleff is concerned, Uncle Louis is his father: he mostly calls him "uncle" because that's his biological relationship to him. Cleff is very close to Uncle Louis, and he frequently confides in him and goes to him when he has problems. If it weren't for Uncle Louis, Cleff never would have seriously considered pursuing music as a career, as Uncle Louis's encouragement has been his primary motivator.
As a child, Cleff didn't have any friends, but in his teen years, he managed to make several. His best friend is Yakko Warner. On paper, Cleff and Yakko seem like an unlikely match: Cleff is rather shy and quick to submit to authority while Yakko is super outgoing, chatty, and always leading the charge. Their meeting was a surprise occurrence as well. While on the run from Ralph, Yakko, thinking Cleff's house was abandoned, decided to go inside and hide. Yakko was wrong, and Cleff discovered him hiding underneath a table. Luckily for Yakko, Cleff understood the situation, and the two bonded over a shared love of music. Yakko and Cleff are like two halves of a whole: Cleff tries to keep Yakko out of trouble while Yakko tries to help Cleff become more confident in his musical abilities.
Eventually, Yakko introduced Cleff to Wakko and Dot, and while Cleff is not as close to them as he is to Yakko, Cleff deeply cares about them as well. Cleff thinks Wakko is adorable and super sweet, and he hates seeing him upset. Sometimes, when Cleff visits the water tower, Cleff will show up with snacks for Wakko. Cleff and Dot's relationship is a bit more tumultuous than Cleff's relationship with either of her brothers, as Dot sees Cleff as something of a rival. When Cleff has an idea, Dot is often the quickest to doubt him, but the two do see each other as close friends and are always happy to help out... once they're sure the other's idea will work out.
As for Cleff's relationships with the Warner Bros. staff, the only one he would consider his friend is Dr. Scratchansniff. Cleff did not like Scratchansniff at first, but the two soon realized that they were more similar than different. They don't spend time with each other often, but thanks to Cleff, Scratchy has noticeably softened up towards the Warners, as Cleff has helped him realize more clearly that he loves them. Cleff does not particularly like Hello Nurse or Ralph, but understands that they are simply doing their jobs (though he's often on Ralph's bad side due to his friendship with the Warners). Cleff considers Thaddeus Plotz his archenemy even though the two have never directly met. The Warners and Scratchansniff desperately hope that the two never meet in-person.
Cleff is an open-minded idealist. Although sometimes it's hard for him, Cleff always tries his best to look on the bright side of any situation. Cleff is also quite the dreamer. He loves music and wants to pursue it as a career somehow, and he has no plans on giving up. Cleff may not be as witty as Yakko, Dot, or Wakko, but he does have a way with words that can be helpful in getting out of a sticky situation. Cleff is shy, but when he tries, he has no trouble making friends, as he endears himself to people through his charisma and kindness to almost everyone he meets. Cleff believes that he should only be unkind to people who deserve it.
Cleff has anxiety disorder, and is prone to worrying about many things, from whether or not he is musically gifted enough to make it as an artist to if the Warners actually like him. He's also a perfectionist, and will not stop working on something unless he is completely sure that he has done it right. Although Cleff is very kind, he is also very easy to irritate. The Warners' antics generally do not get on his nerves, but he can't stand being teased or being asked the same question over and over. When he's mad, Cleff will go silent and stomp off somewhere to be alone and need someone to talk to him to help him calm down.
Cleff loves music, and while he isn't entirely sure what he wants to do as a career, he's hoping to be able to turn his passion into one. Cleff has a purple notebook where he writes down song lyric ideas. He's convinced that all of his lyrics are bad, though Uncle Louis and Yakko assure him that that isn't true. Cleff likes to sing as well, and he can also play several instruments. His favorite is guitar, but he can also play bass (both guitar and upright), ukulele, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, piano, and drums, and he is good at all of them. When asked how he can play so many instruments, Cleff attributes it to having lots of free time. Many people assume Cleff also likes to dance, but he thinks he is terrible at it and does not like to dance as a result.
Cleff Lillipad is the son of Raymond and Christine Lillipad, two modern-day hippies with an affinity for music. Cleff was named for the club where they first met: the Treble Clef, with an extra "f" added onto his name to make it appear more namelike. Raymond and Christine were not good with money and would not be able to provide for both themselves and a son, so they asked Louis Lillipad, Raymond's older brother and Cleff's uncle, to look after Cleff until they could get their finances in order. Louis, always having wanted to start a family, eagerly accepted. However, before Raymond and Christine could get their finances in order, they met their untimely end the day after Cleff was born in a car crash. Louis Lillipad became Cleff's legal guardian.
When he was young, Cleff didn't have many friends. He and Uncle Louis would travel a lot for work because Louis is a famous actor, and as a result, Cleff did not make any friends until he met Yakko when he was fifteen. Cleff was homeschooled in order to avoid stressing him out with constant changes in schooling. After years and years of traveling around the world (mostly the United States, Canada, and western Europe) for filming, Louis eventually settled down in Burbank, California in a two-story yellow house nearby the Warner Bros. movie lot. Louis is often out running errands or handling work matters, so Cleff is often alone. One seemingly ordinary day, while Cleff was alone, he saw a strange person hiding under the coffee table. When Cleff saw him, the person introduced himself as Yakko Warner. Although it was odd to see a stranger in his home, Cleff quickly befriended Yakko when he knew he meant no harm. Now, the two are best friends, and Cleff is growing more confident in himself with each passing day.
